This puzzle is a sphere arranged around a mechanism similar to the 3x3x3 cube. The puzzle has two little balls which can be removed if moved through the holes in the pieces to one of the holes on the outside of the puzzle. This takes a while and requires more than just your cube algorithms to arrive at a solution.
The puzzle in the photo was acquired from ebay and was originally sold as a Mensa puzzle. It is quite a large old thing - a little larger than all of the puzzles on this site. As you might imagine, it doesn't turn like a speed cube - nor would you want it to. It takes a while to solve and, this being a fiddly process, this puzzle is more of an ornament in my collection than a working puzzle.
